MCU Spider-Man Trilogy Director Jon Watts Reveals Reason For Not Returning For Spider-Man 4

The reason why Jon Watts will not return to direct Spider-Man 4 has been revealed. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has had many successful franchises, but none of the MCU's trilogies have achieved what the Spider-Man movies have. The hero is the only one to have two solo films among the MCU's highest-grossing, which shows how great Watts' work at Marvel has been. However, the director will not be back for Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4, and the franchise's success has to do with it.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts explained that after Spider-Man: No Way Home's premiere, he realized it was time to move on from the MCU and not direct Spider-Man 4. Seeing the audience's reaction to the Spider-Man movie that united Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire's versions of Peter Parker, Watts realized that nothing could compare to that level of spectacle. The director then exited the MCU's Fantastic Four movie, which he was set to helm, and will not return for Spider-Man 4 or other movies on the MCU's slate. Check out the full quote below:

“That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable. It’s never going to be like this, ever again.”

Who Could Be The Director Of Spider-Man 4?
Some Names Have Been Rumored

One of the most requested names to direct Spider-Man 4 is Sam Raimi, who is another one of the creatives rumored to be among those considered for the movie. Raimi famously directed the first Spider-Man movie trilogy, helming Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man movies. The director's contributions to the character are iconic, with Raimi's Spider-Man 2 still being considered by many as the hero's best film. After joining the MCU with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Raimi could bring his unique Spider-Man expertise to Holland's Peter Parker in Spider-Man 4.

Another name that has appeared in the Spider-Man 4 rumor mill is Drew Goddard. The writer/director would be perfect for the film, as Goddard has already contributed to one of the best live-action offerings that has ever come from Marvel. Goddard created Netflix's Daredevil series, which will live on in the MCU with the soft reboot Daredevil: Born Again, bringing back stars like Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Jon Bernthal, and more. Based on Daredevil's universal praise, Goddard would be the ideal candidate to helm the darker Spider-Man 4 that Jon Watts' Spider-Man: No Way Home set up.
